Carlow was the venue for the first open water National Series race and it really didn’t disappoint. Fingal Tri were very well represented with nearly 20 members nervously making their way to the swim start. Despite the grey skies the water was a nice 15 C and we all survived the initial brain freeze. After a respectable turnaround in T1 it was off on to the bike for the long drag up to the turnaround point before zooming down the road, against the head wind, back into the town. Another transition and we were now ready to finish it off with the nice flat run along the river bank. There were a lot of smiling faces crossing the finish line but none bigger than those Paul Ketterer, Keith Hayes, Eamonn Caffrey and Dara Elliott who had just completed their first ever triathlon – Well done lads.
The women’s race was won by defending champion and ex-Fingal lady Aine Donegan in a time of 01:07:20. Special mention also goes to Barbara Tobin who finished 3rd in her AG. In the men’s race, Con Doherty took first place on the podium in a time of 00:59:35.
But we were all winners that day and with the meeting point highlighted with the Fingal flags flying high, there was great banter regaling all stories of the dramas encountered along the way. Once the debrief was done everyone headed off with their heads held high full of excitement for the next race. Well done to everyone!
